How to Check a Coil and Contacts on a Welded Shut Leach Relay
How to Check a Coil and Contacts on a Welded Shut Leach Relay. You hold up the Mag-Probe to the leach relay to see if the light turns on. If the light turns on you know the coil is energized and you have voltage, current and continuity in the coil.
Now you will observe the output of the leach relay that may power a little motor, a light or a valve. As you turn the coil on and off you will be able to see the light on the Mag-Probe LED go on and off. What this is telling you, is the coil is operating properly.
If you watch the output you should see the relay go on and off. If the output does not cycle on and off then the contacts are not opening and closing properly. You have a non-functional relay.
Keep in mind if the output stays on all the time the contacts are welded shut. This welding of the contacts is caused by heat and is typically caused by high current.
